This national symposium brings together leading film organisations, filmmakers, artists and archivists to discuss online access to film archives and the creative use of this material in the digital age. Film is a crucial part of our heritage, however, online access to archives is limited especially when compared to other online collections like youtube. This symposium will open up the debate and look at different ways of collecting, archiving and accessing our shared film history.
Keynote speaker: Rick Prelinger, archivist and founder of the US Prelinger Archives, a collection of over 60,000 films acquired by the Library of Congress.
Other speakers included: Craig Baldwin, filmmaker, free culture advocate and founder of Other Cinema, San Francisco; Iain Sinclair, London-based author and filmmaker; Mike Sperlinger, Assistant Director of LUX, London; Rebecca Clemen, Distribution Manager at Experimental Arts Intermix, New York (EAI); Laure Prouvost, artist and founder of tank.tv; artists Thomson and Craighead; Paul Gerhardt, Archives for Creativity; David Lawson of Black Audio Film Collective and Smoking Dogs Films; Vicki Bennett, People Like Us and Poppy Simpson, Archive Online Manager at BFI.
The symposium launch event included an energy-themed screening from Prelinger Archives and drinks reception on Thu 11 March. Following the symposium, we welcomed legendary filmmaker Kenneth Anger as a special Festival guest to talk about his work.
